Eva Longoria is just the latest high-profile member of the Latino community to weigh in on Donald Trump‘s controversial remarks about Mexican immigrants.
Speaking at a luncheon for the National Association of Latino Independent Producers, Longoria admitted she’d refused to comment on Trump because she didn’t want “to contribute to the emotional poison.”

“It struck a chord within our community that touched our emotions so deep that I don’t want to contribute to that poison being spread,” Longoria told E!’s Marc Malkin of Trump calling Mexican immigrants “rapists” and people bringing crime and drugs into the U.S. “Because if I contribute, it’s just going to bring more attention to the original comments,” she said.
But the Mexican-American actress, producer and political activist added, invoking Hitler, that words can be powerful and those who say provocative things have to be prepared for people to take offense.

“What I think he doesn’t understand and what people don’t understand is words create emotional poison. …Hitler moved a nation with words, just words,” she said. “So you have to expect this backlash. If you say something like that, as he has said, you must expect a backlash.”
Trump’s remarks, made during his speech two weeks ago declaring his presidential candidacy, have already caused Univision, NBCUniversal and Macy’s to cut ties with the real estate mogul.
